Albert Martinez used to take a lot of mature roles for TV and film. He even starred in Pusong Mamon, where he had to do a torrid kissing scene with Eric Quizon. Asked about whether he could still do the same today, he tells the Philippines’ Ultimate Showbiz Hub:
“At my age, hindi na ako as aggressive when I was younger. Although, once makakita ako ng magandang script, I’ll still, for sure, [gusto] na maging part non. Pero kasi nung bata ako, gusto mo lahat kagatin mo na lang, eh. Kasi ang tawag ko don ‘stars on my shoulder.’
“I accepted Pusong Mamon because yon ang kulang sa career ko. I want to do a gay character na hindi ko pa nagagawa, so ginawa ko siya. So, nasa shoulder ko na yung star non. So ganun yon, na pag nagawa ko na, siyempre you have to move on to the next level,” Albert Martinez explained.
Despite playing controversial characters, Albert has kept quite a wholesome image as a real-life individual.
How did he do it?
“I stay away from the showbiz lifestyle kasi. Pagkatapos ng trabaho, uwi. At saka ang pinokus ko talaga yung family. Pag wala akong ginagawa we go out of town ng pamilya ko. Ganun lang,”
Through it all, Albert Martinez just has a single regret in all his years in show business:
“Ang regret ko lang talaga, in this type of work, you will have to sacrifice, kasi during that time, yung work load ko talagang… from day one nung dumating ako ng Pilipinas at nag-artista ako ullit, dire-diretso, walang naging patid.
“And then of course, ang sinacrifice ko yung moments with your kids, moments with your wife. So when you look back, especially nga ngayon, kaya sinasabi kong regret kasi Liezl (Martinez) is not here anymore. Even if I want to payback, anong ibabayad ko, she’s gone?
Albert shared that there were many family moments he missed because he was at work. For example, he shared that he couldn’t attend many of his children’s graduations as well as a few birthdays.
“So, yon yung mga time na pag iniisip mo, parang… ‘Sayang nga pala ‘no, dumaan sa buhay ko yon na hindi ko na-experience.”
