From his early days as MJ2 in “First Day High” to his character Lt. Abel Ibarra in “AWOL”, we’ve all witnessed how Gerald Anderson grew as an actor throughout the years. Now, the “Pinoy Big Brother” graduate top bills his own films and television series–most recent acting project being “My Perfect You”. Together with Pia Wurtzbach, he told the love story of Burn and Abi, and effectively so, according to their director, Cathy Garcia-Molina.
In fact, the film genius even likened Gerald’s performance with none other than award-winning actor, John Lloyd Cruz.
While shooting the final scenes of the film, Garcia-Molina said that she saw something from Gerald that only ‘a John Lloyd Cruz’ can give.
“Habang nanonood ako, nakita ko si John Lloyd. I don’t know if it’s a good thing but it’s a sincere performance that I only get from a John Lloyd Cruz. To me, it means I saw a sincere performance.”
John Lloyd and Garcia-Molina have worked together on eleven films–the greatest number of films she has ever worked with an actor. Just as much as the Kapamilya star has learned to grow fond of her, the film director has familiarized herself with his stagecraft.
Going back to Gerald, Garcia-Molina talked about another particular scene that impressed her about the actor.
“I admire him for allowing me na tapakan ang ego niya at rendahan. May isang sequence, sabi ko, ‘Uy! Pogi ka na dun!’ Partida, gulo-gulo pa yung buhok niya. May isang part sa movie na maikli na buhok niya. I’m so scared na baka I might not see [his character] Burn anymore, I might see Gerald and I don’t want to see Gerald talaga.”
Garcia-Molina, whose strategy is seemingly to strip off the identities of the celebrities so as to make her characters more compelling to its audience, bluntly stated:
“Finally, kinunan namin, sabi ko, ‘P*t*ng*na ka, pag ako nakita ko… Sabi ko, pag ako nakita ko si Gerald Anderson, lagot ka sa akin! Wala akong nakitang Gerald.”
