Have you ever heard of the term ghost town or ghost city? Well, if you’re thinking about a place that is haunted by ghosts or ghouls then you are very wrong. This term is used to describe places that once housed a great population but is now left abandoned and desolate. These places were once living and bustling with people – now left in ruins seemingly with no sign of life.
We may have heard of a few ghost towns in countries such as America or Europe but there’s nothing quite like the ancient City of Ani in Turkey.
This “crown jewel” was once considered to be the capital of Armenia. It’s quite shocking to think that all of the people residing in this city suddenly got up and left. But once you hear the reasons why they had to go, you probably would have done the same.
Ani was a stronghold for three centuries and has seen empires rise and fall. But back in the ancient days, threats were all too real and wars could erupt at any moment. During these times, great armies can suddenly appear from the horizon and try to invade your peaceful city.
The city was first invaded by Turks who murdered or enslaved their people but this wasn’t enough reason for people to leave. In another time, it was the Mongols that tried to capture them but despite losing so many people, Ani persevered.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was when the natural disasters came in. A devastating earthquake destroyed their cathedral and left the city in ruins. A once great city was reduced to a small community and the current onslaught of threats made the remaining people decide to move to better, safer locations.
